The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains the Earth. Its name derives from its appearance as a dim "milky" glowing band arching across the night sky.
The naked eye cannot distinguish individual stars inside the milky way.
The term "Milky Way" is a translation of the Classical Latin via lactea.

The Galaxy has this appearance because it is a disk-shaped structure that is being viewed from inside. Earth is located within the Galactic plane of this disk.

The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy 100,000–120,000 light-years in diameter containing 200–400 billion stars.
The Galaxy is estimated to contain at least as many planets. Ten billion of them could be located in the habitable zone

(In astronomy and astrobiology, the habitable zone is the region around a star where a planet with sufficient atmospheric pressure can maintain liquid water on its surface)
